Birmingham, AL - Burglary Call - Suspect Runs Around Building - Jumps Into Running Patrol Car - Crashes Patrol Car - Severe Damage - Escapes

A Birmingham police car was stolen and wrecked by a suspect this afternoon.

Lt. Sean Edwards said that an officer was investigating a burglary near the Midfield area when his car was stolen. The suspect got away from police, went around the back of a building, and jumped into the police car.

Edwards said the car was still running.

He said the suspect, "jumped in the car and just took off."

The suspect crashed the car at 55 St. Southwest and Whatley St., just a short distance from where the car was stolen.

The damaged police car was towed away at 3:30 p.m.

Police are still searching for the suspect. No officers were injured in the chase or crash.
