A police cruiser was stolen and later recovered as a Grand Rapids police officer was rendering aid at the scene of a serious assault.

Police responded to the 1000 block of Benjamin Avenue SE on a report of an assault late Tuesday, Oct. 4.

While there, an officer parked his cruiser. At some point, someone jumped in the cruiser and began driving north on Benjamin Avenue about 9:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 4.

Police soon after recovered the cruiser nearby at the corner of Alexander Street SE and Fuller Avenue.

Police said the assault victim on Benjamin Avenue was critically injured and may been both stabbed and shot.
